Illness and Deviancy
To examine the American concept of illness as being an undesirable deviation from a natural condition in an effort to clarify the dispute between those who argue that criminals are mentally ill and should be cured (not punished) and those who argue that the "criminally insane" are not mentally ill, but criminals who should be punished (not cured). P.I. will analyse the development of hyperkinesis in medical literature and attend lectures and clinical rounds at Albany Medical college.
