Theories of Chraracter in Fiction
To assess the variety of current theories of "character" in fiction so as to establish the different meanings attached to that term, the different conceptions of fiction behind these meanings, and the usefulness of these assorted views for the teaching of fiction. The problem of defining one's own theory of character will be a central concern, as will be the conflict between the norms of the "liberal imagination" and teh emerging norms of modern fiction. The question of whether character provides an important key to the continuing humaneness, the continuing stress on human worth, of the novel genre, will be considered.
