Community-School Conflict in American Public Education: A Historical Perspective

(Seminar for School Administrators) To provide historical perspective on American school controversies (i.e., antagonisms between community groups and school administrators), specifically on their causes and resolution. They will be dealt with in three periods: 18OO-1840 (unstructured school vs. desire for more systematic education), 1860- 1920 (ethnic and religious antagonisms), and 1940-present (symbolic cases). Finally, seminar will explore recent efforts at judicial resolution of school busing.
