Lawyers and Justice in American Society

To encourage lawyers and judges to reflect upon the broader social implications, for justice, of their individual professional activities Seminar will attempt to illuminate tension between social and professional, or personal and public, values by examining professional history and ethics, adversary proceedings, conceptions of professional responsibility, and affirmative action issues in legal education. Disciplines of history, sociology and literature will be applied to illustrate the development of the legal profession in the 20th century the social structure of the bar, and the implications of that history and structure for a primary American value: equal justice under law.
