Ethical Roots of the American Regime: What is the Proper Role for Liberal and Civic Education in American Democracy?

Goal of the study is to understand and explain the role of the liberal arts within the American regime. Study will focus on two themes: fostering political excellence—the prudence of a statesman—and encouraging responsible citizenship. Study will evaluate some examples of American political thought (such as that of Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson). Consideration will be given as to whether or not liberal education aimed at human excellence in America is threatened by well-intentioned but flawed attempts to democratize or market it to ever greater numbers of people.
