The Social Context of the Evolution of American Cavinism from Edwards to Dwight

To illuminate an aspect of American religion through the discoveries of social history. American Calvinism 'underwent a significant evolution from the time of Jonathan Edwards to that of his grandson Timothy Dwight. This evolution was closely related to shifting values within contemporary American society. Project will study the relationship between American social values and the history of this one religious tradition. Focus will be on how attitudes toward law, grounded in English sources and shaped by American experiences, may have been related to the new concern for law within Calvinistic theology during the 18th century.
