The Primacy of Promising: A Proposal for Transcendental Argument in Ethics

This project will be devoted to the subject of promising, which has often been regarded as a paradigm of a moral obligation; yet it is still the most mysterious. For promising seems to create an obligation, but from what can it arise? This concept can be best understood and justified by means of a transcendental argument in ethics, according to which promising—conceived as the will obligating itself- is a necessary condition for the intelligibility of rule-governed or "norm-bound" behavior.
