Slave Criminality in Virginia, 1706 to 1865

To study slave criminality in Virginia and to formulate an interrelated model of cultural interaction and development in early America. PI has studied nearly 4,000 trials of slaves between 1706 and 1865 and puts forward the principle that slavery per se did not inevitably cause slave criminality. Both criminal and non-criminal behavior resulted from the experience of slavery. Study will concentrate on the changing and diverse patterns of slave crime.
