Peasants Into Townsmen: St. Petersburg in the Second Half of the Eighteenth Century

St. Petersburg in the latter half of the 18th century contained in microcosm many of the problems of urbanization and Westernization that later beset the whole of Russia. The peasants in particular faced a wholesale reorientation of their patterns of living. Study will examine the varieties of peasant migration into the city, peasants' labor in the work force, the nature and amount of their incomes and expenditures, their passage of leisure time, and related questions. An analysis will be made of the changes that the urbanization process made in the values of peasants moving to the city. Work will be based on archival materials in note form and on microfilm.
