Biography of Traditional Congolese Ruler: The Sovereign of the Ba-Kuba People

Biography of Mbope Mabinchii, sovereign of the Ba-Kuba people of the Congo. Study to concentrate on years under Belgian rule (1908-1960) and the first years of independence, to show transition from traditional Africa maintained under colonialism to the westernizing Africa which began to emerge with independence. Fellow to spend summer in Congo interviewing American missionaries who dealt with the Ba-Kuba ruler (and who can present a western, non-Belgian view of the major events during his rule) and with members of his entourage. Fellow will then go to Belgium to interview former colonial officers who worked with Mbope Mabinchii until 1960. Fellow previously interviewed the ruler during brief stay with him in 1967.
