Three officials at the subprefectural level--the subprefect, who had administrative charge of the area; the sheriff, responsible for maintaining local law and order; and the registrar, who dealt with fiscal affairs and supervised clerical personnel--formed the key link between the central government and the people. Fellow completing study of the sheriff in Sung China, to be read before an international conference of sinologues at Cambridge University in August, 1970.
