Anglican Church of Colonial South Carolina

To prepare a draft for a monograph dealing with the established church in South Carolina from its creation in 1704 to its disestablishment in the American Revolution. Part one, “Church and State" will follow the development of the church as an institution, showing how an American denomination gradually developed out of a European state church. Part two, "Church and Society", will discuss the character of the ministers, their contribution to the culture of South Carolina, and the relationship between the church and the people of Carolina. The church was an effective institution that made positive contributions in terms of religious and educational services. Slavery, the Great Awakening, and the American Revolution will be dealt with through their relationship to the established church.
