The Letter of Helmuth James von Moltke: An Annotated Edition

To make a definitive edition of the 1,600 letters written by Heimutn James von Moltke to his wife between 1929 and his death in early 1945. Moltke was a landowner and lawyer and, during the war, legal adviser to the German High Command. He was arrested in January 1944 and tried and hanged a year later, aged 37. The charge against him was that he had been the founder, center, and guiding spirit, over several years of a clandestine and carefully collected discussion and planning group of Social Democrats, liberals and conservatives, Protestants and Catholics concerned with the working out of agreed positions of a post-Hitlerian political order. He opposed Nazi ideology.
