Women Operatives in Lowell, Massachusetts, 1826-1860

To examine in depth the social origins of native-born women working in the textile mills of Lowell, Massachusetts between 1830 and 1860. Study will get statistics from a large sample of women operatives listed in the records of the Hamilton Manufacturing Company in Lowell between 1830 to 1860 who are noted as coming from a limited number of southern New Hampshire towns. Study will increase knowledge of the social origins of women operatives and also reveal a great deal about the impact of early industrial capitalism on women.
