Walter Pater and Virginia Woolf: The Rhetoric of Denial

To critically study the decisive, but repressed influence of the English essayist Walter Pater on the work of Virginia Woolf. PI proposes to explain Woolf's insistent denial of Pater's influence by showing how Pater anticipates Woolf's otherwise original notion of literary meaning, and how this anticipation also serves to elucidate the question of Woolf's style, one which her critics have largely ignored.
