A Study of the Japanese Religions

To plan and complete a book-length manuscript on the Japanese new religions, which arose in the mid-nineteenth century but came to flourish especially before and after WW II. These new forms of socio-religious organization indicate important changes in the social and religious makeup of Japan, and are significant in understanding the role religion plays in all modern cultures. A comparative model of study will be applied to 4-6 "new religious movements" selected as most interesting.
