The Origins of the Federal University: Science, Government, and University in WWII

A preliminary study to examine the enduring nexus between universities and the federal government created as a result of WW II that had profound implications for the university's structure and function and for the future of scientific research and development. A pilot study will be conducted to define this large project's methodology. One month will be spent gaining an overview picture by examining the files of the American Council on Education. During the second month the grantee will study one of the three university sites of the Manhattan atomic bomb projects, Columbia University. Her central thesis is that the development of the A bomb was a prime example of the contract relationship at the heart of the close government-university ties.
