Stage and Spectator in the Theatre of Antonio Buero Vallejo

To investigate the nature of the theater as a participatory act for the spectator and to examine the more recent theories about and experiments in audience participation (e.g. writings by Artaud, Styan, Gadamer, Brook, Julian Beck) in order to assess the relationship between scenic space and audience space in Buero's theater. The devices Buero uses range from symbolic staging to play-within-a-play structures to enactments of psychic states or conversions of the entire play into a psychic phenomenon.
