The English Standard Public Schools of Hawaii: Social Control and Upward Mobility

To study the history of the English Standard school system that existed in Hawaii for approximately 40 yrs. The system's effects on the values and language attitudes of Hawaii's students and on the socio-economic development of the state and the possible reasons the Hawaiian government used to found and maintain a discriminatory dual public school system will be analyzed. PI also expects to draw implications from the Hawaiian experience for current policies regarding the teaching of Standard American English to native speakers of non-standard dialects.
