The Influence of Greenwich Village Intellectuals on Cultural Definitions of Black People in America, 1913-1929

To study the influence of the intellectual community of Greenwich Village in 1913 on attitudes about Black Americans Three questions will be addressed: 1) what interpretations and attitudes regarding Blacks were communicated through the works and activities of Village intellectuals? 2) what statuses and roles did black intellectuals hold there? 3) what interactions existed between the village intellectuals and participants in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s? An analysis of the literature about the Village and interviews with people connected with the intellectual community there will result in a contribution to historical understanding of how intellectual communities can affect their cultures.
