Individual Rights and State Regulation of Marriage: Lord Hardwicke's Act of 1753

To study the influences of early Liberal theory, particularly the writings of John Locke, on the theoretical discussions of natural rights and civil authority as they might apply to the State's relationship to marriage and to the relationship of husband & wife. The 20 pamphlets sparked by Lord Hardwicke's Act for the Better Preventing of Clandestine Marriages (1753), which asserted that Parliament had the authority to define what constituted a valid marriage will be closely examined.
