The Poetry of Jonathan Swift

To examine the methods and purposes of Jonathan Swift's public political poetry, and to compare his achievement with that of other poets writing on the same events and personalities. The major poems of Swift's later career will also be examined to demonstrate the ways Swift merges social verse and political modes of poetry. Only recently has Swift's poetry begun to receive scholarly and critical attention; this project is part of a book-length study of Swift as a major 18th century poet.
