The Poetry of William Collins

To do a full-length critical analysis of the poetry of William Collins. Although critical interest in Collins' work (and mid-eighteenth century poetry in general) is now greater than it has ever been, such a study does not currently exist. Study is in 3 parts: 2 introductory chapters about the biographical problem in the interpretation of 18th century poetry; a second section scrutinizing his major odes; and a concluding chapter discussing to what extent Collins' poetry is characteristic of its age, and how successfully our own critical vocabularies are able to illuminate the nature of his (and his contemporary poets') achievement.
