The Cult of Vincent Ferrer and the Religious Life of the Later Middle Ages
This project is a study of the canonization in 1455 and early cult of the popular Dominican preacher Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419) as a case study in the lived religion of the later Middle Ages. Vincent Ferrer's case illustrates not simply the process by which an official image of the saint was shaped by ecclesiastical authorities, but also the multifaceted nature of a powerful religious symbol, as political leaders, individual Christians, and different localities each sought to use Vincent as a potent sign to meet a variety of contexts and experiences.
