The Cotton _mappamundi_ is the oldest detailed English map of the world, and both looks back to England's Roman colonial past and forward to its imperial future. This project will produce a comprehensive digital edition as a resource for scholars and students to investigate the content and context of this significant (but neglected) historical document. The digital format of this edition creates a more efficient, intuitive and powerful architecture of study than possible in traditional print. Within the program, users can navigate a high-resolution facsimile of the map, as well as transparently link to commentary on its specific details, or to a wealth of contextual information such as literary sources, related medieval maps, background essays, and modern scholarship.
