Constitutionalism and Political Change: Thomas Jefferson and the Development of the Impeachment Power

The Republican impeachment of Federalist judges in 1803 has been understood correctly as a victory for judicial independence and a defeat for a political use of the impeachment power. By examining this event in the context of Thomas Jefferson's attempt to reconcile the Constitution with political change, this study will add to the current understanding of this historical event and to scholarly understandings of Jefferson.
