This project will complete the final stages of Denise D. Knight’s coedited book, “The Selected Letters of Charlotte Perkins Gilman,” forthcoming in 2008 from the University of Alabama Press. The letters date from 1872, when Gilman was 12, to 1935, just days before her suicide at the age of 75. Over the past four summers, Knight has read, transcribed, edited, and contextualized letters written by and to Gilman. The summer stipend will allow Knight to draft the chapter introductions, to finish writing hundreds of endnotes, and to finalize the manuscript for submission to the publisher by the September 1, 2007 deadline.
