Linking Food, Material Culture, and Texts in Anglo-Saxon England
The project will link food-related objects, material culture, and texts across the disciplines of Anglo-Saxon studies (England, c. 600-1100 A.D.). In the pilot phase, I will analyze portions of two bodies of evidence concerning food-related objects in Anglo-Saxon England, one archaeological and the other textual. I will identify food-related objects that survive from the period and make each object the focus of two parallel data records, one material and one textual. These records will be displayed in a software interface designed to match the textual and archaeological evidence and to sort and display the related information in any categories the user wishes to examine.
