A New History of Tribunes of the Plebs and the Tribunate in the Roman Republic

Tribunes of the plebs were sacrosanct officers, defenders of the plebs and legislators whose laws regulated or facilitated many aspects of Roman life including political, military, religious and economic activity. Despite its historical importance, the last major study of the tribunate, from its origin to the end of the Republic, dates to 1932. Subsequent studies focus on a narrow range of topics for discrete periods years; none takes into full account tribunes whose activities are recorded, but whose names are not. This study has, at its core, a comprehensive textual database incorporating 600+ references to the activity of anonymous tribunes, plus a wider range of evidence (e.g., demographics, careers, ethnicities) for hundreds of known tribunes. From it emerges a new picture of the Tribunician College's work in the administration of Rome; it also provides a foundation for a new understanding of such important and hotly debated issues as lawmaking and popular participation.
