Orthodox Passions: Filial Piety in Eighteenth-Century China

Orthodox Passions is an interdisciplinary monograph that examines the changing practices and representations of filial piety in 18th-century China. An NEH stipend would fund the research and writing of a chapter that analyzes a tendency by modernist reformers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries to elide the emotions of filial piety and romantic love when writing about the imported concept of love. This additional chapter both strengthens the central argument of the book that late-imperial subjects experienced filial piety as a self-expressive emotion, and documents the continuing affective and social relevance of filial piety into the 20th century.
