American Bicentennial Planning and Technical Assistance for Local Historical Organizations

Six-year project to develop programs to make Bicentennial meaningful historical and educational experience and an opportunity for Americans to acquire greater understanding of nation's heritage. ABSTRACT: Six year project (NEH support for first year) to develop programs to make Bicentennial meaningful historical and educational experience and an opportunity for Americans to acquire greater understanding of nation's heritage. Project to coordinate efforts of its 3300 societies by defining ways in which these societies can utilize rich collections of literary and museum objects in commemorative programs at "people level" and by creating printed and audio-visual materials to provide historical organizations with practical guidelines on how to best utilize their resources in helping local communities realize educational benefits. Special concern for finding means by which Bicentennial programs can put current problems in historical perspective and national ideals into personal heritiage of all Americans, regarless of origin, race or length of citizenship. Also want to find ways to make Bicentennial relevant to states beyond original thirteen colonies. Planning committee of seven persons, distinguished as writers, teachers, or historical administrators, serves as editorial committee for suggested Bicentennial activities, collecting objects and manuscripts, preparing effective audio-visual materials and displays. Association guidelined directed toward providing understanding of American heritage and unifying effect such understanding my produce; toward preventing Bicentennial which is "a monument to cash-register philosophy and tourism."
