Community College Public Humanities Centers Initiative

The planning of three humanities centers at community colleges in Massachusetts and public programming examining recent immigration to the state.

Mass Humanities (MH) requests $74,835 to plan and lay the foundation for three Public Humanities Centers based at community colleges in Massachusetts, which will offer high-quality public programs on an on-going basis to audiences that have little or no contact with the humanities. During the planning phase (2016-2017), MH will provide resources and expertise to Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, Bristol Community College in Fall River and New Bedford, and Holyoke Community College. In developing and promoting CCPH programs, the centers will collaborate with a variety of local organizations, including immigrant service agencies, ethnic clubs, libraries, historical societies, and museums. During the period of the planning grant, teams of outside scholars drawn from four-year colleges and CC faculty will work with their community partners to develop, present and evaluate three public programs focused on “The Changing Immigrant Experience in Massachusetts, 1965-2015.”
