Detroit 1967: Looking Back to Move Forward

Planning for an exhibition and public programming that examines the 50th anniversary of Detroit’s 1967 riot.

The Detroit Historical Society (Society) requests $40,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities under the “Museums, Libraries, and Cultural Organizations: Planning Grant Opportunity” for the continued planning and development of an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Detroit civil disturbance in the city. Entitled Detroit 1967: Looking Back to MOVE FORWARD (Detroit 1967), this exhibition will recount this significant event in the city’s history using the latest humanities scholarship and the words and stories of people who lived through it. Detroit 1967 will debut in July of 2017 in the Detroit Historical Museum’s Booth-Wilkinson Gallery.
