El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park Visitor Center Plan

Planning for interpretive exhibitions and programs in a newly constructed visitor center about the history of Santa Barbara.

This project will fund planning for exhibits and programs in a new visitor center at El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park. Housed in a recently reconstructed portion of this 18th century Spanish fort in downtown Santa Barbara, the visitor center will include an outdoor archaeology exhibit, orientation video, interpretive panels, interpreted objects, a printed guide, an outdoor supply and shipping display and a complementary website component. The center will allow SBTHP to prototype the story of the "presidio neighborhood," an interpretive concept which involves embracing all the layers of settlement, cultural exchange, architectural evolution and economic expansion that transformed the Presidio site and surrounding community over time. This project will enable visitors to experience the time line of a community history that is in many ways representative of the development of California and the American West, through the microcosm of a single neighborhood.
