Pages from the Past: Illuminated Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts in Boston-area Collections

Planning of an exhibition, a catalog, a website, educational programs, and an international conference on illuminated manuscripts dating from the 9th to the 16th century.

A group of Boston-area institutions (including the Boston Public Library, the Houghton Library of Harvard University, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the McMullen Museum of Boston College) seeks support for the planning of an exhibition of approximately 150 manuscripts entitled "Pages from the Past: Illuminated Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts in Boston-Area Collections." The various manuscripts will be displayed concurrently from September through December 2016 at the three venues. The goal of this exhibition is to explore the meaning and materiality of the early book using local area medieval and Renaissance manuscripts to demonstrate the continuity of formats and themes up to the present digital age. One significant product of the collaboration will be the establishment of a Boston-area consortium of educational and cultural institutions that will continue to collaborate long after the project is completed and the exhibition closed.
