World on the Horizon: Swahili Arts Across the Indian Ocean Museum Exhibition

Planning for a traveling exhibition, a catalog, and programming exploring the unique, transcultural aesthetic of Swahili art from the 16th century to the present.

Krannert Art Museum (KAM) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is requesting a Planning Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support the development of an international loan exhibition and companion catalogue, "World on the Horizon: Swahili Arts Across the Indian Ocean." "World on the Horizon" will be the first exhibition organized in the United States dedicated to the visual arts of this dynamic transoceanic region. Scheduled to open at KAM in October 2016, the exhibition will remain on view until March 2017, after which it will travel to at least two additional venues. The exhibition takes its title from a line in the novel By the Sea, in which a "world on the horizon" described an outward-looking ethos--one of encounter and possibility--that linked the diverse peoples of the Swahili (east African) coast across vast expanses of land and sea.
