World War I and American Art

Implementation of a traveling exhibition, a catalog, and programs on the relationship between World War I and American art from 1913 to 1938.

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) requests a $400,000 NEH MLCO grant to support implementation of the exhibition, accompanying publication, and related educational programs for "World War I and American Art." This project fundamentally reconsiders the impact the war had on artists and the role they played in shaping American culture during and immediately afterward. The accompanying catalogue will feature essays by 7 scholars. The exhibition will be seen in 2016 and 2017 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Philadelphia, PA); New York Historical Society (New York, NY); and a 3rd U.S. venue to be determined.
