Portland Museum of Art (Portland, ME 04101-3802)
Jessica May (Project Director: January 2015 to present)

PMA Collection Reinstallation

Implementation of a reinstallation of all the museum’s collections of fine and decorative art.

Designed to reinvigorate the role of the permanent collection in all areas of museum activity, the Portland Museum of Art (Maine) will reinstall its collection in 2016 with a specific focus on three priorities, each rooted in the museum's collection. The reinstallation will highlight Maine's importance in American art history; reveal transatlantic ties in 19th and 20th century European and American art; and showcase decorative arts as an integral part of the collection. This comprehensive reinstallation project is the focus of this grant application, and is the capstone of the PMA's ongoing, multi-year Collection Initiative, which encompasses a series of inter-related projects including the development of a new interpretive plan, publication of a collection catalogue, opening of an art study room, and launch of an online collection database. Opening on February 14, 2016, the museum-wide reinstallation entails a holistic reconceptualization of the collection across the PMA campus.
