Theater of the World: Art and China after 1989

Implementation of a traveling exhibition, a catalog, a website, and associated public programs about experimental Chinese art between 1989 and 2008.

Theater of the World: Art and China after 1989 will trace the emergence and development of experimental artistic practice in China from 1989 to 2008, a transformative period of tumultuous geopolitical, technological, and socio-economic changes in China and around the world. It is the first exhibition to interpret experimental art (shiyan yishu) from an international perspective, framed by the end of the Cold War, the proliferation of globalization, and China’s rise as a world power. The show will present 150 works of painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation art, featuring sixty artists and collectives active across Greater China. The exhibition and its accompanying scholarly publication, public programming, and digital resources will offer a visually rich historical narrative that will help the American public to better understand the cultural expressions of these critical witnesses to China’s rapid yet uneven political, social, and economic transformation.
