American Art and the East

Implementation of a traveling exhibition, a catalog, a website, a symposium, and related educational and public programs examining the impact of Asian art, literature, and philosophy on American art from 1860 to 1970.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM) respectfully requests a National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman's Special Award grant of $1 million within the category of "America's Historical and Cultural Organizations: Implementation Grant." NEH funding would enable SRGM to organize, design and present "American Art and the East," an interpretive traveling exhibition illuminating the dynamic and complex impact of Asian art, literacy texts and philosophical concepts on American artistic practices of the late 19th-century (ca. 1860-1900), early modern (ca. 1900-1945), postwar avant-garde (1945-1970) and early contemporary periods (1970 - ). Featuring 270 objects in array of media, including paintings, works on paper, sculptures, video art, installations and books, the exhibition will travel to three major cities across the United States: SRGM (Jan 2009); San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (Summer 2009) and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Fall 2009).
