The Meaning of Service: Building the Practice of Humanities-Based Reflection at the Core of Volunteer Service

Implementation of a national reading and discussion program for people involved in volunteer service, using works of literature to explore issues central to the nature of public service.

The Meaning of Service is a national, humanities-based reading and discussion program for people in volunteer service. Each Meaning of Service session consists of at least five challenging, facilitated discussions using readings drawn from literature, philosophy and religion that help program participants consider the deep questions underlying their civic activity. In this next phase of the Meaning of Service, the Illinois Humanities Council will extend the practice of reading and discussion to more service organizations and reach 1,800 - 2,500 participants; engage not only volunteers but also staff and board members of service organizations; and establish solid partnerships within each state, among leading service organizations, the state service commission, and the state humanities council, with the goal of moving a majority of service organizations across the state to make humanities-based reflection a core component of their programming at member, staff, and board levels.
