Bandits & Heroes, Poets & Saints: Popular Art of the Northeast of Brazil

Implementation of a traveling exhibition, a catalog, a website, and public programs on the folk art of the people of the Northeast region in Brazil whose culture is a unique blend of African, European, and Amerindian traditions.

Con/Vida seeks NEH support to produce and present the touring exhibition, "Bandits & Heroes, Poets & Saints - Popular Art of the Northeast of Brazil." The exhibition includes 105 art objects/groups of objects, 7 photo/text panels with flat-screen video monitors, and 2 large video installations. Produced in partnership with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, "Bandits & Heroes" will be accompanied by a catalogue, website, and series of educational and public programs that emphasize the confrontation and continuity of African, European and Amerindian traditions - with an emphasis on African contributions - in this little known but culturally rich area of the Americas. The show will open at the Charles H. Wright Museum in winter 2013 and tour through 2015 to the DuSable Museum of African American History, Chicago; the Robert W. Woodruff Library at the Atlanta University Center, Atlanta; and the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, Greensboro, NC.
