City at Sea: USS Intrepid

Implementation of a long-term, multimedia interpretation of nine restored spaces aboard the Intrepid Museum's historic aircraft carrier.

The Intrepid Museum Foundation (Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum) is seeking a $400,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities toward the long-term exhibition project "City at Sea: USS Intrepid," scheduled to open in the fall of 2015. This engaging and interactive self-guided exhibition will bring to life, for museum visitors, nine (9) restored historic spaces aboard the Intrepid Museum's historic aircraft carrier, the former USS Intrepid (CV-11). Using dynamic and varied interpretive formats, "City at Sea" will examine life at sea for the ship's crew within the very spaces where they lived, worked and carried out Intrepid' s historic missions. NEH supported a planning phase from September 2009 through March 2011, which enabled Museum staff to refine humanities themes, conduct primary source research and develop exhibition content.
