Art of the Joseon Dynasty: Treasures from the National Museum of Korea

Implementation of a traveling exhibition, a catalog, a website, and public programs on the art of Korea's Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) requests a $900,000 Implementation Grant at the Chairman's Special Award level to support the exhibition, "Art of the Joseon Dynasty: Treasures from the National Museum of Korea" (working title), the first major survey of the artistic production of the world’s longest-ruling Confucian dynasty that reigned in Korea for over 500 years. Organized in collaboration with distinguished partners both in South Korea and the United States, the National Museum of Korea (NMK), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), the exhibition will include 120 objects in various media. The exhibition will broaden the public’s understanding of Korean civilization and reach a large national audience in three major U.S. cities over a 10 month period: Philadelphia (March - May 2014), Los Angeles (June - August 2014), and Houston (September - December 2014).
