The Artist Behind the Work: A New Installation of NW Coast Native Art from the Seattle Art Museum's Permanent Collection

Consultation to plan a reinstallation of the museum's permanent exhibition of Northwest Coast Native art.

The permanent exhibition of the Seattle Art Museum's superb collection of Northwest Coast Native art will be completely renewed as part of an overall museum expansion. The new installation will enact the theme of the individual artist, their influences and lasting legacies -- "The Artist Behind the Work." The underlying premise to explicate the works of individual artists will be from the point of view of the maker and original audience, as well as from historical viewpoints, thus demonstrating the changing meanings of the artwork over time and through differing cultural lenses.
