"Eye to Eye"

A series of twelve half-hour color television programs relating works of visual art to other aspects of human experience and surroundings. Produced jointly by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston public television station WGBH, the series will be shown over WGBH and made available to the other 199 public television stations across the country. Subject matter includes 4 programs on "Beauty and the Law" which will deal with moral and political censorship of art works, forgery, theft and removal of art works from their place of origin; 3 programs on the "Middle Ages," which will focus on placing medieval art works in the the social and emotional contexts of their time and relating them to attitudes and conditions of the 1970s; and 5 programs on "The City" using Boston to explore nation-wide problems of urban visual environment (e.g. musuem's role in the city, how design of city affects its residents, public monuments, public neighbor hood art--outside building wall murals--and billboards, posters and advertising art. Conversations and discussions with an among prominent artists, critics, scholars and museum personnel, as well as general narrative comment will tie the visual series together.
