Voices of Brooklyn

Series of programs on various ethnic cultures in New York ABSTRACT: Brooklyn Public Library will present two series of five programs each, one to focus on Jewish, Irish, Scandinavian, Italian, and Old New York cultures and the other to focus on African, Spanish-American, Haitian, and American Negro cultures, in order to acquaint people of Brooklyn with the variety of humanistic traditions exisisting in the borough and to promote multi-cultural understanding. Each series will consist of program in areas of song, poetry, movies, music, dance and folklore appropriate to each culture, tied together with interpretive comment. Programs will attempt to show common needs and desires of mankind, how expression differs in various cultures, and the beauty and variety of cultural expression. Estimated 3000-4500 people will view live presentations (30 presentations in all): larger numbers of people will be reached by projected exhibits, video tapes, and an anthology dealing with the project. Assistance from over 100 ethnic organizations will be sought for planning and publicizing series and for contributing folk articles and talent for performances. Funds for personnel and contractual services, printing, promotion, administrative costs, equipment and supplies.
