County Historical Agent Project

County historical agent travel around a 7-county region, talking to local organization, educators and the press, initiating projects (such as listing of all historical sites, area-wide school program on local history, formation of new historical societies), and providing technical assistance to area museums to help them find new methods of displaying collections. Designed to promote awareness of local history. ABSTRACT: County historical agent, conceived much along same lines as county agricultural agent, promotes interest among local residents in the rich cultural history of southwestern Wisconsin, an area which includes two historical sites (Stonefield Village in Cassville and Villa Louis in Prairie duChien, Wisconsin's oldest city, a trading post for French, Indians and Americans, scene of a battle in War of 1812), the first territorial capitol at Belmont, several historical museums, and a shot tower where bullets were made for use during the Blackhawk War. County Agent Robert W. Sherman travels around seven-county region, talking to local organizations, educators, and press, initiating projects (such as listing of all historical sites by local residents and historical societies, an area-wide school program which emphasizes local history, formation of new historical societies as found necessary), providing technical assistance to area museums to help them find new methods of displaying collections. Project seeks to provide public with awareness of both history and hitorical resources of their locality. Encourages local organizations to pursue historical studies and projects, to gain pride in their heritage. Funds for salary, travel and office expenses of county agent.
