Summer Program in Cultural Enrichment II

South Dakota State University to sponsor three-week multi-disciplinary humanities program with emphasis on region's Indian and pioneer history and culture. At least 150 adult participants, 50 each week, from throughout state and elsewhere, from rural and small town areas, Indian reservation. ABSTRACT: Continuation of successful H69-0143, So. Dakota State Univ. to sponsor three-week multi-disciplinary humanities program with emphasis on region's Indian and pioneer history and culture. At least 150 adult participants, 50 each week, from throughout state elsewhere, from rural and small town areas, Indian reservations. Purpose to present to individuals generally not reached humanities presentations a more profound perspective in which to comprehend region's contemporary problems. Applications screened by County Extension Agencies, Community Action Planning Agencies, So. Dakota Coucil of Churches, Am. Indian Research Center. Participants encouraged to take back learning to community. Topics presented from standpoints of anthropology, art, music, history, literature, etc. concentrated schedule of seminars, field trips, lecture-demonstrations, panels, performances, workshops, demonstrations, films. Speakers include nationally recognized Indian and non-Indian authorities in Indian history, culture and society. First week to emphasize culture of past; sent Indian in present, concentrating on his attempt to salvage his past as an Indian in an alien society. Plan to add to film on Sioux Indian produced in last year's program, showing results of White racism, feeling of White paranoia--to further understanding of White and Indian attitudes. Film has already had wide showing in state, enthusiastically received. Fund for participants' living expenses; salaries, living expenses for non-resident staff, field trips, film supplies, operations, publicity, travel.
