Historical Archaeology of Providence, Rhode Island

To provide practical experience in historical archaeology to students of History and Anthropology on selected colonial sites in Providence, Rhode Island. All aspects of archaeology will be covered: archival research, excavation, restoration and conservation of artifacts, and integration and interpretation of historical research and archaeological data. Our work will investigate colonial and post-colonial development in Providence, roughly the first 200 years from 1636-1836, and either verify present historical record or correct any mistaken conceptions by archaeological evidence. This project will not only educate the students involved but our report and exhibit of findings will help inform the community of its early history. Also we hope to set a precedent of student-initiated archaeological fieldwork at the undergraduate level.
